Google’s much-anticipated new phone, the HTC-designed Nexus One, could make its debut next week.

Google has scheduled a press event for Tuesday, January 5 at its Mountain View, California, headquarters. Though the company hasn’t mentioned Nexus One, the invitation mentions Android, Google’s mobile operating system for phones, and the company is widely expected to show the device that has had smartphone industry watchers buzzing for weeks.

The invitation-only event will be held two days before the Consumer Electronics Show begins in Las Vegas and just one day before many CES exhibitors have scheduled major press conferences.

It’s a move straight out of the Apple playbook. In January, 2007, Apple famously upstaged CES when it unveiled the first iPhone at an event in San Francisco — even as most technology journalists and executives were huddled in Las Vegas for the trade show.

Google hasn’t commented about Nexus One. But recent online leaks suggest the Nexus One will be a GSM-device with a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi connectivity, accelerometer and compass. It is expected to run the latest version of the Android operating system, Android 2.1.

Where Google could really innovate is how the phone is sold. The Nexus One is likely to be sold unlocked, which means consumers don’t have to be tied into long-term contracts with telecom carriers. T-Mobile, which offered the first Google phone, could provide “billing, coverage, features and rate plans,” says TMONews, a blog that tracks T-Mobile. The Nexus One could also go on sale the morning of Jan. 5, says the site, though there’s no word yet on possible pricing.

Will Google offer expensive unlocked handsets in the United States — a la Nokia — or can it come up with a clever model to subsidize the device cost through mobile advertising or carrier support? Google’s press conference next week should answer that question.

Nyalakan power management (sleep mode) untuk mengistirahatkan komputer dalam jangka waktu yang lebih singkat, bahkan lebih baik lagi jika Anda memakai fitur hibernate. Jika Anda butuh mengakses komputer dari tempat lain, Anda dapat menggunakan fasilitas Wake on LAN agar komputer bangun dengan akses dari komputer lain dalam jaringan yang sama.
Screensaver tidak menghemat energi. Pada monitor zaman dahulu screensaver dapat menjaga keawetan monitor, tapi monitor jenis itu sudah tidak ada lagi dan screensaver berganti fungsi menjadi hiasan.
Donasikan komputer yang hendak dibuang, pakai program khusus untuk menghapus bersih data-data rahasia.
Beberapa komponen seperti keyboard dan mouse sebaiknya dipakai kembali di komputer baru.
Perangkat keras yang memakai AC Adapter, biasanya tidak benar-benar berhenti bekerja walau telah dimatikan. Untuk mematikan perangkat tersebut bisa dengan mencabut kabelnya, memakai stop kontak yang memiliki tombol on off, ataupun dengan bantuan gadget seperti PowerMinder.

Laptop hanya memerlukan 10% energi yang digunakan Desktop. Flat screen hanya menggunakan 30% energi yang digunakan oleh Monitor CRT
Coba upgrade RAM, sebelum memutuskan ganti komputer. Komputer lambat bisa karena kotornya registry atau ada background services yang berjalan padahal sebenarnya tidak kita perlukan. Cek dan matikan services yang sedang berjalan padahal tidak perlu itu. Misalnya untuk Windows jalankan Start > Run > type “msconfig”

Matikan komputer ketika tidak digunakan (malam hari). Mematikan komputer akan mengurangi umur komputer adalah mitos yang salah

Pilih virtualisasi daripada pembelian hardware baru (hemat 70% energi)

If you get this problem same as me, so I'll give you the solution to solve this problem:
1. Copy mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll from PC which installed windows XP2 from C:\windows\system32
2. Restart your computer and boot as save mode
3. Paste that 2 files into C:\windows\system32 in your computer that installed windows XP SP3
4. Restart your computer and boot normally
5. Then you can use remote desktop connection SP2 on your windows XP SP3

This solution I think is better than we must download that remote desktop connection SP3

How to Turn Your XP Laptop into a Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot

That's real and I've try it, so let's check it out:

1. To start setting up your mobile hotspot, click on Start and go to the Control Panel. Double-click “Network Connections.”
2. Right-click your wireless connection and chose Properties. Then click Wireless tab
3. Network Connections Properties dialog, click the box that says, “Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings.” Then at the bottom of the dialog window, click the “Add” button to start creating your mobile hotspot.
4. Enter a name for your network, select “Open” under Network Authentication. Then, under Data Encryption, select “WEP.” Then enter desired password under “Network key” and confirm it in the next field. If you are unable to enter a password, un-check “The key is provided for me automatically” and the password key fields should open. Then check “This is a computer-to-computer (ad-hoc) network; wireless access points are not used.” Then click OK to create your hotspot.

WEP stands for “Wired Equivalent Privacy.” It is not strong encryption, and it is easily defeated. Why do we suggest it? Because it works with a wide variety of devices - older laptops and handhelds - and because it can use a five-character password. The password may be referred to as “40-bit ASCII” on some devices. (Palm OS devices will want to want to know that.) Note also that ad-hoc networks are intended to be networks of convenience, or temporary. If you have a more permanent need to share an Internet connection, it would be better to purchase a Wi-Fi router.

Your new network will now appear under “Preferred Networks.”

5. Then in window Wireless Network Connection the new connection which is ready to connect

6. Then if you have connected to the internet via LAN so make the Network Bridge by click on Local Area Connection and Wireless Network Connection using CTRL then right click then choose "Bridge Connection".

Beberapa hari yang lalu PC saya di teror oleh virus bernama "Virus Shortcut" adapun ciri -ciri dari virus tersebut adalah:

1. Setelah menginfeksi komputer, dia akan membuat file induk database.mdb di My Documents

2. Virus tersebut akan membuat file autorun.inf di setiap drive harddisk, flash disk, dan folder tanpa kecuali

3. Dia akan membuat file Thumb.db (hati-hati, perhatikan bahwa file ini tanpa huruf s sedangkan thumbnail cache yang asli di komputer memiliki tambahan huruf s alias thumbs.db) di setiap folder

4. Untuk memancing korban, dia akan membuat file Microsoft.lnk dan New Harry Potter and….lnk di setiap folder yang jika dieksekusi akan langsung mengaktifkan virus tersebut.

5. Seperti halnya virus-virus lokal lainnya, dia akan membuat duplikat setiap folder namun kali ini bukan dengan ekstensi .exe melainkan extensi .ink alias shortcut.

6. Pada task manager terdapat proses services wscript.exe yang sedang berjalan. Dalam kondisi normal, tidak ada proses seperti ini.

Setelah dicoba berbagai cara akhirnya menemukan artikel yang membahas hal ini, adapun cara membasmi virus tersebut:

Langkah - Langkah pembasmian:

1. Matikan System Restore. Sejak dulu saya selalu mematikan system restore segera setelah proses instalasi windows. Untuk keperluan backup dan imaging system, saya lebih memilih menggunakan third party seperti acronis ataupun Norton Ghost.

2. Matikan proses virus wsrcipt.exe (C:\WINDOWS\System32\wscript.exe)
Bisa menggunakan Process Explorer atau misc. tool pada HijackThis..

3. Hapus file virus database.mdb di My Documents..

4. Hapus file duplikat virus..

Untuk proses penghapusan, anda bisa menggunakan fasilitas search pada Windows.. Pada “More advanced options”, pastikan option “Search system folders” dan “Search hidden files and folders” keduanya telah dicentang.

Search file dengan nama autorun.inf ukurannya 1 KB
Search file dengan nama Thumb.db ukurannya 8 KB
Search file dengan ekstensi .lnk.lnk ukurannya 1 KB
Hapus semua file yang ditemukan..

5. Hapus registry Autorun yang dibuat virus dengan menggunakan HijackThis..
Cari di bagian HKCU\..\Run: yang berhubungan dengan file database.mdb

Pada kepemimpinan sebelum Bart, terlihat bahwa Yahoo! tdk benar2 sehat & terkesan tdk menentu. Bartz berasal dari perusahaan Autodesk Inc, sebuah perusahaan pembuat piranti lunak arsitektur Autocad. Bartz merupakan CEO di perusahaan itu dari 1992 hingga 2006. Dari Autodesk, Bartz pindah menjadi pimpinan eksekutif sebuah perusahaan di San Rafael, California, dgn bayaran US$500.000 (±Rp5,5milliar/bln) sebelum Yahoo! meliriknya.

Lirikan terhadap Bartz tampaknya bukan main2. Untuk membuat Bartz pindah ke Yahoo!, diberikanlah paket kompensasi senilai US$19 juta (±Rp209 milliar) di samping bonus2 lain. FACEBOOK

Facebook is the second largest social network on the web, behind only MySpace in terms of traffic. Primarily focused on high school to college students, Facebook has been gaining market share, and more significantly a supportive user base. Since their launch in February 2004, they’ve been able to obtain over 8 million users in the U.S. alone and expand worldwide to 7 other English-speaking countries, with more to follow. A growing phenomenon, let’s discover Facebook.

The Facebook Phenomenon

First, let’s start by looking into Facebook in a broad spectrum - as the network, the phenomenon, the company, and its brand.

History

Originally called thefacebook, Facebook was founded by former-Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg (while at Harvard) who ran it as one of his hobby projects with some financial help from Eduardo Saverin. Within months, Facebook and its core idea spread across the dorm rooms of Harvard where it was very well received. Soon enough, it was extended to Stanford and Yale where, like Harvard, it was widely endorsed.

Before he knew it, Mark Zuckerberg was joined by two other fellow Harvard-students - Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes - to help him grow the site to the next level. Only months later when it was officially a national student network phenomenon, Zuckerberg and Moskovitz dropped out of Harvard to pursue their dreams and run Facebook full time. In August 2005, thefacebook was officially called Facebook and the domain facebook.com was purchased for a reported $200,000.

Availability

Unlike its competitors MySpace, Friendster, Xanga, hi5, Bebo, and others, Facebook isn’t available to everyone — which explains its relatively low user count. Currently, users must be members of one of the 30,000+ recognized schools, colleges, universities, organizations, and companies within the U.S, Canada, and other English-speaking nations. This generally involves having a valid e-mail ID with the associated institution.

Surveys & Studies

A large number of surveys and studies have been conducted around Facebook - some with interesting results. For instance, according to an internal September 2005 survey, approximately 85% of the students in the supported colleges had a Facebook account, with 60% of them logging in daily. A survey conducted by Student Monitor revealed Facebook was the most “in” thing after the iPod and tying with beer, and comScore Media Metrix discovered users spend approximately 20 minutes everyday on Facebook. Another 2005 survey said 90% of all undergraduates in the U.S. use either Facebook or MySpace regularly, and a detailed questionnaire analysis by Chris Roberts revealed that 76.2% never click on its ads. Perhaps the most amazing statistic of all may be that Facebook is the 7th most trafficked site in the U.S.

Business & Funding

Given the situation other social networks on the web are facing, Facebook is in a good position financially. While it hasn’t managed to get acquired like its rival MySpace (despite some rumors about an $800m deal with Viacom), it’s been quite lucky in most aspects. For its initial funding, it received $500,000 from Peter Theil, co-founder of PayPal. A few months later, it was also able to get $13 million from Accel Partners, who are also investors in 15 other Web 2.0 startups, and $25 million from Greylock Partners, making their overall venture equal to approximately $40 million.

For users, Facebook’s core service is completely free and ad-supported. In fact, in August 2006 Facebook signed a three year deal with Microsoft to provide and sell ads on their site in return for a revenue split. The deal followed an announcement from Facebook’s direct competitor MySpace who signed a similar deal with Google. The youthful demographic that both the services attract is highly prized amongst advertisers and should return a good amount of revenue for both the services to stay alive - and profit. Another deal which made news in July was Facebook’s agreement with Apple to give away 10 million free iTunes samplers to Facebook users. A deal has also been signed to provide Facebook credit cards.

Lawsuits & Concerns

In its early days, Facebook faced an extremely threatening lawsuit from ConnectU, a very similar social network which - like Facebook - shares its roots back to Harvard, and as a result almost got shutdown. The founders of ConnectU alleged that Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg stole source code while he was in their employment. Zuckerberg denied the allegation and the lawsuit was dismissed.

Facebook has also been host to other issues and concerns, especially in the privacy sector where its privacy policy states “Facebook also collects information about you from other sources, such as newspapers and instant messaging services. This information is gathered regardless of your use of the Web Site.” Another theory is that Facebook could also be a data-gathering project or if not, used extensively for these purposes. Facebook’s policy also states that it “may share your information with third parties, including responsible companies with which we have a relationship.”

The Service

Now, let’s look into Facebook - the service itself, and some of its features, highlights, and the things that got Facebook where it is today.

Facebook Profiles

As Facebook has evolved, so have its profile pages - new fields have been added and users can share more information than before.

A typical Facebook profile consists of a number of different sections, including Information, Status, Friends, Friends in Other Networks, Photos, Notes, Groups, and The Wall. Most of the sections are self-explanatory but some are specific to Facebook.

Facebook Photos

With over 1.5 million photos uploaded daily, one of Facebook’s most popular features has been the ability to upload photos. Users can upload unlimited photos from their cell phone or through its Java-based web interface. Facebook is one of the few services to offer an unlimited quota with their only restriction being a 60-photos-per-album limit - this is much appreciated by Facebook’s college demographic.

The process of uploading photos is very simple. Users create albums which they can assign limitations to (e.g. visible to my friends only) and upload photos within them. The album is then put into their profile, and other users with right credentials have the ability to see and comment on them. Facebook also gives the feature to share the photos with a simple web link or send them via AIM or by e-mail. What’s more, users can also order prints online through a simple integrated interface.

Facebook Groups

Just like every other social network, Facebook has something called ‘groups.’ Users can create new ones or join and participate in existing ones. This is also displayed in their profile and is a good indication of hobbies and interests a person might have.

There are two kind of groups, a normal group and a secret group, which isn’t shown on the profile. A normal group is just like any other, but users can also create and invite others into secret groups. These can be used for collaborating on university projects, and provide a way to have closed discussions. About 80% of the groups are ‘fun-related’ and companies can even sponsor groups - as is the case with, for example, the Apple users group.

Facebook Events

Another Facebook success is their ‘events’ feature, which provides the ability to organize, be part of, and plan for events. This feature has been extremely successful when it comes to organizing parties.

Along with organizing and joining events, users can also invite and recommend others to an event. This feature, however, has raised some controversy as it is generally the start of underage drinking and dry campus violations. Colleges and universities use the feature to catch planning of such events before hand and investigate those that are over. In any case, it’s one of the most popular features of the service and even beats some of the competing products made specifically for this purpose.

Facebook Developers

As of August 2006, Facebook has offered a free Developers API called Facebook Developers. This essentially gives anyone access to Facebook’s internals and lets programmers create widgets, mashups, tools and projects based around Facebook.

This is an important feature for Facebook since it makes it the first major social network to give access to its API. Although it is limited to 100,000 requests a day, it’s more than enough for a decent web app to come through. What’s more, a selection of applications have already been created. FaceBank is a promising tool which lets you ‘keep track of depts and shared expenses with friends.’ Another interesting application is lickuacious which lets you ‘rank your friends by wall popularity.’ The Wall, of course, is Facebook’s comments feature.

Facebook’s most recent addition launched in late August. The service is called Facebook Notes, and allows users to write a Facebook blog. All notes are displayed in the user’s profile, and other members can add comments.

Notes possesses an important feature, which is the ability to import and syndicate an external blog, although unlike Technorati, doesn’t allow you to claim one only to yourself (e.g. it’s possible to claim the New York Times syndication feed easily in one’s Notes). The service allows HTML to be included in the posts, although JavaScript and Flash are disabled. You can attach photos and also post via cell phone by sending your notes to notes@facebook.com. Another interesting feature is tagging - tagging a post with a username will automatically send it to that specific user. The Notes feature has been well received.

The Future

Facebook is a massively successful social networking service that grew to prominence in virtually no time. It’s not hard to see why: its features and tools are highly appealing, and Facebook users are extremely well networked in real life. Rumors of an acquisition continue to circulate, with some estimates putting the price in the billions of dollars. In the short term, however, Facebook plans to go it alone, continuing to build out one of the world’s most successful social networks.

The History of Christmas

The history of Christmas dates back over 4000 years. Many of our Christmas traditions were celebrated centuries before the Christ child was born. The 12 days of Christmas, the bright fires, the yule log, the giving of gifts, carnivals(parades) with floats, carolers who sing while going from house to house, the holiday feasts, and the church processions can all be traced back to the early Mesopotamians.

Many of these traditions began with the Mesopotamian celebration of New Years. The Mesopotamians believed in many gods, and as their chief god - Marduk. Each year as winter arrived it was believed that Marduk would do battle with the monsters of chaos. To assist Marduk in his struggle the Mesopotamians held a festival for the New Year. This was Zagmuk, the New Year's festival that lasted for 12 days.

The Mesopotamian king would return to the temple of Marduk and swear his faithfulness to the god. The traditions called for the king to die at the end of the year and to return with Marduk to battle at his side.

To spare their king, the Mesopotamians used the idea of a "mock" king. A criminal was chosen and dressed in royal clothes. He was given all the respect and privileges of a real king. At the end of the celebration the "mock" king was stripped of the royal clothes and slain, sparing the life of the real king.

The Persians and the Babylonians celebrated a similar festival called the Sacaea. Part of that celebration included the exchanging of places, the slaves would become the masters and the masters were to obey.

Early Europeans believed in evil spirits, witches, ghosts and trolls. As the Winter Solstice approached, with its long cold nights and short days, many people feared the sun would not return. Special rituals and celebrations were held to welcome back the sun.

In Scandinavia during the winter months the sun would disappear for many days. After thirty-five days scouts would be sent to the mountain tops to look for the return of the sun. When the first light was seen the scouts would return with the good news. A great festival would be held, called the Yuletide, and a special feast would be served around a fire burning with the Yule log. Great bonfires would also be lit to celebrate the return of the sun. In some areas people would tie apples to branches of trees to remind themselves that spring and summer would return.

The ancient Greeks held a festival similar to that of the Zagmuk/Sacaea festivals to assist their god Kronos who would battle the god Zeus and his Titans.

The Roman's celebrated their god Saturn. Their festival was called Saturnalia which began the middle of December and ended January 1st. With cries of "Jo Saturnalia!" the celebration would include masquerades in the streets, big festive meals, visiting friends, and the exchange of good-luck gifts called Strenae (lucky fruits).

The Romans decked their halls with garlands of laurel and green trees lit with candles. Again the masters and slaves would exchange places

"Jo Saturnalia!" was a fun and festive time for the Romans, but the Christians though it an abomination to honor the pagan god. The early Christians wanted to keep the birthday of their Christ child a solemn and religious holiday, not one of cheer and merriment as was the pagan Saturnalia.

But as Christianity spread they were alarmed by the continuing celebration of pagan customs and Saturnalia among their converts. At first the Church forbid this kind of celebration. But it was to no avail. Eventually it was decided that the celebration would be tamed and made into a celebration fit for the Christian Son of God.

Some legends claim that the Christian "Christmas" celebration was invented to compete against the pagan celebrations of December. The 25th was not only sacred to the Romans but also the Persians whose religion Mithraism was one of Christianity's main rivals at that time. The Church eventually was successful in taking the merriment, lights, and gifts from the Saturanilia festival and bringing them to the celebration of Christmas.

The exact day of the Christ child's birth has never been pinpointed. Traditions say that it has been celebrated since the year 98 AD. In 137 AD the Bishop of Rome ordered the birthday of the Christ Child celebrated as a solemn feast. In 350 AD another Bishop of Rome, Julius I, choose December 25th as the observance of Christmas.

The American version of the Santa Claus figure received its inspiration and its name from the Dutch legend of Sinter Klaas, brought by settlers to New York in the 17th century.

As early as 1773 the name appeared in the American press as "St. A Claus," but it was the popular author Washington Irving who gave Americans their first detailed information about the Dutch version of Saint Nicholas. In his History of New York, published in 1809 under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker, Irving described the arrival of the saint on horseback (unaccompanied by Black Peter) each Eve of Saint Nicholas.

This Dutch-American Saint Nick achieved his fully Americanized form in 1823 in the poem A Visit From Saint Nicholas more commonly known as The Night Before Christmas by writer Clement Clarke Moore. Moore included such details as the names of the reindeer; Santa Claus's laughs, winks, and nods; and the method by which Saint Nicholas, referred to as an elf, returns up the chimney. (Moore's phrase "lays his finger aside of his nose" was drawn directly from Irving's 1809 description.)

The American image of Santa Claus was further elaborated by illustrator Thomas Nast, who depicted a rotund Santa for Christmas issues of Harper's magazine from the 1860s to the 1880s. In looking for the historical roots of Santa Claus, one must go very deep in the past. One discovers that Santa Claus as we know him is a combination of many different legends and mythical creatures.

The basis for the Christian-era Santa Claus is Bishop Nicholas of Smyrna (Izmir), in what is now Turkey. Nicholas lived in the 4th century A.D. He was very rich, generous, and loving toward children. Often he gave joy to poor children by throwing gifts in through their windows.

The Orthodox Church later raised St. Nicholas, miracle worker, to a position of great esteem. It was in his honor that Russia's oldest church, for example, was built. For its part, the Roman Catholic Church honored Nicholas as one who helped children and the poor. St. Nicholas became the patron saint of children and seafarers. His name day is December 6th.

In the Protestant areas of central and northern Germany, St. Nicholas later became known as der Weinachtsmann. In England he came to be called Father Christmas. St. Nicholas made his way to the United States with Dutch immigrants, and began to be referred to as Santa Claus.

In North American poetry and illustrations, Santa Claus, in his white beard, red jacket and pompom-topped cap, would sally forth on the night before Christmas in his sleigh, pulled by eight reindeer, and climb down chimneys to leave his gifts in stockings children set out on the fireplace's mantelpiece.

Children naturally wanted to know where Santa Claus actually came from. Where did he live when he wasn't delivering presents? Those questions gave rise to the legend that Santa Claus lived at the North Pole, where his Christmas-gift workshop was also located.

In 1925, since grazing reindeer would not be possible at the North Pole, newspapers revealed that Santa Claus in fact lived in Finnish Lapland. "Uncle Markus", Markus Rautio, who compared the popular "Children's hour" on Finnish public radio, revealed the great secret for the first time in 1927: Santa Claus lives on Lapland's Korvatunturi - "Ear Fell"

The fell, which is situated directly on Finland's eastern frontier, somewhat resembles a hare's ears - which are in fact Santa Claus's ears, with which he listens to hear if the world's children are being nice. Santa has the assistance of a busy group of elves, who have quite their own history in Scandinanvian legend.

Over the centuries, customs from different parts of the Northern Hemisphere thus came together and created the whole world's Santa Claus - the ageless, timeless, deathless white-bearded man who gives out gifts on Christmas and always returns to Korvatunturi in Finnish Lapland.

Since the 1950s, Santa has happily sojourned at Napapiiri, near Rovaniemi, at times other than Christmas, to meet children and the young at heart. By 1985 his visits to Napapiiri had become so regular that he established his own Santa Claus Office there. He comes there every day of the year to hear what children want for Christmas and to talk with children who have arrived from around the world. Santa Claus Village is also the location of Santa's main Post Office, which receives children's letters from the four corners of the world.

Well .. If you feel that the answer, then you are wrong. Conversely, the keyboard layout that is common today (QWERTY) is one of the order is not the most efficient that we intended to, we can type more slowly. So too? I 'll try to explain now ..

Way to go, society.

Inspired by a South Park episode in which one character labels all redheads as evil, some 5,000 people decided to take a silly joke and elevate it into reality by joining a "National Kick a Ginger Day" group on Facebook. The online ringleader: A 14-year-old Canadian kid, who naturally insisted it was all a gag.

Alas, dozens of attacks were reported on the ostensible holiday last week -- November 20 -- from both attackers and attackees. While some of the attacks reported are likely phony, many are assuredly real, including a pair of young Alberta girls who say they were punched and kicked at school. Canada's Royal Canadian Mounted Police is taking the case deadly seriously and is investigating it as a hate crime.

As absurd as this issue is -- red-haired people have not historically been the victims of any real discrimination or hate crimes -- it's emblematic of the way in which online networks can become a tool in real-world violence other and anti-social behavior. It takes a lot of effort and considerable personal risk to physically go to a meeting of, say, the KKK. But how hard is it to join a white supremacist social networking group? Or register at an Aryan Nation discussion group?

To its credit, Facebook appears to delete all such groups that it encounters -- the National Kick a Ginger Day group has also been removed -- so at least that's a step in the right direction. But people, making a Facebook group that incites violence, however tongue in cheek, is just a bad idea. We should all know by now that despite how frivolous the material on the Internet often is, no one ever seems able to get when you're joking.

Harry Potter's sixth year at Hogwarts turns out to be quite the exciting year. Next, Harry obtains a Potions book which used to be belong to the very mysterious Half-Blood Prince. Harry finds that the Half-Blood Prince's ancient scribbles are written along the margins of almost every page, giving Harry advice on how to improve greatly on his Potions work, and also teaching him a few helpful (and dangerous) spells along the way.

Amidst this, Harry is starting private lessons with Professor Dumbledore, during which Harry learns the dark secrets of Voldemort's past, hoping that they could use these secrets to find a way to defeat him.

Harry's year gets even more stressful with the suspicious actions of Draco Malfoy, who has been sneaking around the school doing, so Harry assumes, Voldemort's bidding. Harry quickly becomes determined, and slightly obsessed, to find out exactly what Malfoy has been up to and putting and end to it.

Yet, during this time, Harry and his friends go through daily life, busy with school work, Quidditch, (in which Harry has been made captain of the team) and of course, romance. Ron has found a new girlfriend, Lavender Brown, a perky (if not obnoxious) Gryffindor student, and Hermione is not happy about it. Ron and Hermione's friendship takes a toll throughout the school year and Harry, as usual, is stuck in the middle. Harry, meanwhile, is facing a romantic dilemma of his own: he realizes he is falling for his best friend's sister, Ginny Weasley, who is unfortunately dating Harry's classmate, Dean Thomas. Harry's pining for Ginny and Ron's hilarious relationship with Lavender give this story a large dose of reality.

Throughout all the school drama, however, the obvious darkness of Voldemort's impending rise to power is always apparent. The incredible action-packed climax is sure to leave the audience stunned and, inevitably, prove that you shouldn't trust everybody who you think is good and also prove that not everyone can manage to survive.

Konten yang dihasilkan penggunanya menjadi sangat dapat diandalkan sehingga majalah Nature mendeklarasikannya sebagai “sumber yang hampir seakurat [Encyclopedia].” Situs tersebut dikutip sebagai sumber informasi dalam lebih dari 100 keputusan pengadilan di AS sejak 2004. Tetapi popularitasnya juga menjadikan Wikipedia sebagai target oleh para spammer, kasusnya sangat banyak sehingga Wikipedia untuk sementara waktu memblokir akses dari seluruh negara Qatar untuk aksi pengeditan. Untuk menggagalkan usaha spammer, Wales putuskan penghapusan tag “nofollow” pada link eksternal, memberitahukan mesin pencari untuk mengacuhkan link dalam mencegah peningkatan buatan terhadap peringkat mesin pencari target link ini. Strategi ini menjamin keunggulan Wikipedia bahwa pencarian akan terus meningkat. Tetapi Wikipedia hanyalah langkah awal Wales. Ia juga meluncurkan mesin pencari pribadi bernama WikiSeek yang melakukan pencarian terhadap situs-situs yang disebutkan dalam Wikipedia.

Called the Leopard, Japan's Oki Electric Industry Company and Okamura Corporation have developed a robotic chair that will rise up to meet you as you sit. It's based off of a robotic set of legs the duo developed that better simulates jumping for bipedal 'bots. The chair doesn't jump, but it will tilt to cuddle you, bringing both the seat and the backrest in to greet you. It'll also gently push you upward when it feels you stand.

The companies describe the sensation as "seating comfort akin to being held in someone's arms." It's currently designed to handle folks weighing 120 to 130 pounds (which pretty much counts the rest of the world out) and is slated for a 2009 release. The Japanese firms plan for more variations of the cuddly 'bot to be available in the future.

-Laskar Pelangi- Ini kisah nyata tentang sepuluh anak kampung di Pulau Belitong,
Sumatera. Mereka bersekolah di sebuah SD yang bangunannya nyaris
rubuh dan kalau malam jadi kandang ternak. Sekolah itu nyaris ditutup
karena muridnya tidak sampai sepuluh sebagai persyaratan minimal.

Pada hari pendaftaran murid baru, kepala sekolah dan ibu guru satu-
satunya yang mengajar di SD itu tegang. Sebab sampai siang jumlah
murid baru sembilan. Kepala sekolah bahkan sudah menyiapkan naskah
pidato penutupan SD tersebut. Namun pada saat kritis, seorang ibu
mendaftarkan anaknya yang mengalami keterbelakangan mental. »Mohon
agar anak saya bisa diterima. Sebab Sekolah Luar Biasa hanya ada di
Bangka,» mohon sang ibu. Semua gembira. Harun, nama anak itu,
menyelamatkan SD tersebut. Sekolah pun tak jadi ditutup walau
sepanjang beroperasi muridnya cuma sebelas.

Kisah luar biasa tentang anak-anak Pulau Belitong itu diangkat dalam
novel dengan judul 'Laskar Pelangi' oleh Andrea Hirata, salah satu
dari sepuluh anak itu. Di buku tersebut Andrea mengangkat cerita
bagaimana semangat anak-anak kampung miskin itu belajar dalam segala
keterbatasan. Mereka bersekolah tanpa alas kaki, baju tanpa kancing,
atap sekolah yang bocor jika hujan, dan papan tulis yang berlubang
hingga terpaksa ditambal dengan poster Rhoma Irama.

Kisah yang tadinya bukan untuk diterbitkan itu ternyata mampu
menginspirasi banyak orang. Seorang ibu di Bandung, misalnya,
mengirim surat ke Kick Andy. Isinya minta agar kisah tersebut
diangkat di Kick Andy karena anaknya yang membaca buku Laskar Pelangi
kini bertobat dan keluar dari jerat narkoba. »Setiap malam saya
mendengar suara tangis dari kamar Niko anak saya. Setelah saya intip,
dia sedang membaca sebuah novel. Setelah itu, Niko berubah. Dia jadi
semangat untuk ikut rehabilitasi. Kini Niko berhasil berhenti sebagai
pecandu narkoba setelah membaca buku Laskar Pelangi,» ungkap
Windarti Kosasih, sang ibu.

Sementara Sisca yang hadir di Kick Andy mengaku setelah membaca novel
itu, terdorong untuk memperbaiki hubungannya dengan sang ayah yang
selama ini rusak. Begitu juga Febi, salah satu pembaca, langsung
terinspirasi untuk membantu menyumbangkan buku untuk sekolah-sekolah
miskin di beberapa tempat. »Saya kagum karena anak-anak yang
diceritakan di buku itu penuh semangat walau fasilitas di sekolah itu
jauh dari memadai,» ujar Febi yang juga datang ke Kick Andy untuk
bersaksi.

Andrea sendiri mengaku novel itu awalnya hanya merupakan catatan
kenangannya terhadap masa kecilnya di Belitong. Dia selalu teringat
sahabat-sahabatnya di masa kecil, terutama Lintang. Sebab tokoh
Lintang merupakan murid yang cerdas dan penuh semangat walau hidup
dalam kemiskinan. Setiap hari Lintang harus mengayuh sepeda tua yang
saering putus rantainya ke sekolah. Pulang pergi sejauh 80 km. Bahkan
harus melewati sungai yang banyak buayanya.

Sayang, cita-cita Lintang untuk bisa sekolah ke luar negeri, seperti
yang sering didorong oleh guru mereka, terpaksa kandas. Lintang
bahkan tak tamat SMP karena orangtuanya yang nelayan tidak mampu
membiayai. »Lintang adalah sosok yang menginspirasi saya. Karena
itu, saya bertekad meneruskan cita-cita Lintang,» ujar Andrea, yang
sekian puluh tahun kemudian berhasil mendapat beasiswa sekolah ke
Sorbonne, Prancis.

Tim Kick Andy yang mendatangi kampung tempat SD itu berdiri, di
Belitong, berhasil 'menemukan' beberapa dari tokoh anak-anak di dalam
novel tersebut. Mereka kini sudah dewasa. Namun kenangan tentang masa
kecil itu sangat kuat membekas. Terutama pada ibu guru Muslimah yang
sangat mereka cintai. »Buku Laskar Pelangi memang saya persembahkan
untuk Ibu Mus yang sangat tabah dan pantang menyerah dalam mendidik
kami,» ujar Andrea.

Maka sungguh menarik menyaksikan bagaimana Kick Andy mempertemukan
Andrea dengan Ibu Guru Muslimah di studio Metro TV. Apalagi ketika Bu
Mus membawa barang-barang yang mempunyai kenangan tersendiri bagi
Andrea dan teman-teman kecilnya dulu di kampung. Kenangan yang
diceritakan kembali oleh Andrea dengan jenaka. Juga termasuk darimana
Andrea mengambil nama yang dipakainya hingga sekarang ini.

Sungguh sebuah novel — yang diangkat dari kisah nyata — yang sangat
menggugah. Novel yang membuat siapa pun yang membaca akan merasa
bersalah dan berdosa jika tidak mensyukuri hidup. Itu pula sebabnya
sutradara Riri Reza dan Produser Mira Lesmana tertarik untuk
mengangkat kisah ini ke layar film.

Ridley Scott's exciting, ultra-fast moving geopolitical thriller, "Body of Lies," based on the novel of the same name by David Ignatius, offers an up-to-the-moment, extraordinarily precise and incisive view of the war on terrorism, as conducted by the U.S. on the ground and back home, in offices, homes, and suburban playgrounds--mostly via cel phones.

Teaming with Ridley Scott for the first time, after three consecutive films with maestro Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio is in top form as Roger Ferris, the young U.S. Intelligence agent, who's considered the brightest, boldest and best of the lot. Joining forces with Agent Ferris is CIA vet Ed Hoffman, played by Russell Crowe, Scott's regular (and favorite?) actor in his fifth film for the director, as the commander behind the scenes, the man on the other side of the cell, who's in daily (sometimes hourly) communication with Ferris.

Scott and author Ignatius, a veteran journalist who has covered the CIA and Middle Eastern affairs for 10 years for The Wall Street Journal before joining The Washington Post, where he is currently a editor and columnist, understand that the new rules of the game of terrorism is not strength of force, or subtle technology, but information, and its ultra-rapid dissemination among the right parties. Mind you, the info could be true or false, valid or invalid, but it needs to be packaged and sold as information!

Scribe William Monahan, who won an Oscar for Scorsese's "The Departed," succeeds in bringing the novel's gritty urgency and combative character dynamics to a multi-dimension film, in which the plot changes so fast that the characters?-and viewers-?are in constant need of adjusting their perceptions and expectations.

In its good moments, which are plentiful, "Body of Lies" recalls (perhaps even pay conscious homage to) the cycle of films about mistrust and paranoia that prevailed in the 1970s, during the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal, works such as Sydney Pollack's "Three Days of the Condor" or Alan Pakula's "The Parallax View." which also served as vehicles for their stars, Robert Redford and Warren Beatty, respectively.

Replete of twists and turns, the plot centers on Ferris' audacious plan to lure a terrorist leader named Al-Saleem out of hiding by making it appear that a rival yet fake organization has become as scary, deadly and effectual as Al-Saleem's own group. However, as expected, Ferris' deftly constructed smoke and mirrors are cloaked in layers of simultaneous subterfuge perpetrated by his own superior, Ed Hoffman.

A ruthless strategist, Hoffman will stop at nothing to protect the highest goal, national security, even if it means sacrificing his best man. As Ferris' scheme gains seeming credibility and global momentum, conflicts with his two closest allies threaten to converge with a crisis of conscience that leaves Ferris vulnerable. Will Hoffman betray him, as he has so many others before him?

Meanwhile, if the head of Jordanian intelligence finds out that Ferris is running a secret operation to snare Al-Saleem, Ferris' life expectancy in Jordan will be measured out in minutes. Ultimately, and that's the weakest part of the narrative, since it resorts to the cherished value of individualism, the survival of Ferris and the success of his mission may depend on the one man he can trust, himself.

In the murky underworld of today's high-stakes global espionage, power is measured and defined by the amount of vital information one acquires and controls, or even appears to acquire and control. In the post 9/11 era, national security is a shifty milieu, in which no one could be really trusted, not friends and not even supervisors of your own country, one in which fateful decisions need to be made within seconds.

Since the movie is concerned with issues of information, misinformation and disinformation, rather than weaponry and technology, at least one third of the yarn consists of brief phone conversations between Ferris and Hoffman, who's often seen around his pool or in his yard, playing with his children, while getting crucial info and making on the spot vital decisions that might affect the lives of Ferris and others.

In this, and other respects, "Body of Lies," which sounds more like a noir melodrama than a suspense political thriller, is novel offering a cynical yet unfamiliar perspective on how the war of terrorism is conducted, both as a matter of routine and as a highly risky, endless cat-and-mouth chase, which inevitably involves risking the lives of officers and civilians, all over the world.

And I mean all over the world: Following the format of a procedural cop-serial killer movie, "Body of Lies" is also a procedural feature, albeit of a very different kind. If my notes are valid, the globetrotting saga shifts locales over a dozen times in the course of its two-hour running time. But it's not disorienting, because every scenes is grounded and identified with a title card indicating the specific time and place

Narratively and visually, "Body of Lies" is a corrective thriller to "Syriana," in which there were too many characters and only one relatable (played by George Clooney) as well as to the preposterously-plotted "Trust," which defied logic and realism in showing how easy it was for an agent like Don Cheadle to infiltrate the ranks of a secretive organization and then betray his colleagues and peers.

In scale, "Body of Lies" belongs to Scott's grand epics, specifically "Black Hawk Down" and the Oscar-winning "Gladiator," though otherwise, it's vastly different. Like them, it's supremely crafted thriller, with thrilling visuals, courtesy of cinematographer (who also shot Scott's former film, "American Gangster"), bravura action set-pieces, chases and shoot-outs.

The duo of Ferris and Hoffman meet t괥-୴괥 only three of four times in the course of the narrative, which is frustrating from an acting point of view, because both DiCaprio and Crow are such gifted and captivating thespians. Cel conversations also present another problem: As crucial as this device is for this kind of film, it often gets tedious, which may be the point, even if it's no so dramatic to observe.

Unlike those movie, though "Body of Lies" is smarter, more complex spy thriller about the various levels of trust and deception that come into play in invading, let alone trying to understand a foreign country with a unfamiliar culture and politics that's perceived in one word as "the enemy."

Bali will make history from the 18th – 26th of October 2008 when it plays host to the first Asian Beach Games in the world.

Bali will become the venue of this international event which will see 45 countries participating with over 10,000 athletes, officials, media and volunteers all flocking to the Island of the Gods for this world class event.

In a press conference conducted at Puri Santrian Hotel in Sanur, President of The National Olympic Committee of Indonesia (KONI), Ibu Rita Subowo officially announced and briefed the press about the preparations underway for the Asian Beach Games 2008 which will mark the largest event ever hosted in Bali.

“Through the Asian Beach Games 2008, Bali will become the focal point of Sporting Tourism in Asia. Apart from strengthening Bali as one of the known tourist destinations in the world, it will also empower Indonesia as a leading sporting nation in Asia.” Said the Governor of Bali, Bpk Dewa Made Beratha.

Ibu Rita Subowo added, “It is a huge honour for Indonesia to be selected to be the host to such a historic sporting event. Bali is the perfect venue for the Asian Beach Games and as this event is the first of its kind in the world, Indonesia is ready to show the rest of the world our true hospitality by welcoming all the athletes, officials and all involved to our great country to witness the spirit of the Asian Beach Games 2008. We are confident that everyone attending will be impressed and we hope to leave a lasting impression in the minds of all.”

Over 50,000 people are expected to support their participating countries in the 13 sports that will compete in this first time event entrusted by the Olympic Council of Asia. The areas of Kuta, Sanur, Pulau Serangan, Tanjung Benoa and Jimbaran have all been selected to act as the venues for each of the sports. Beach Volley Ball, Surfing, Jet Skiing, Sailing, Wind Surfing, Beach Takraw, Beach Hand Ball, Beach Soccer, Para Gliding, Dragon Boat Racing, Triathlon, Marathon Swimming, and the new sport, Wood Ball are the sports to be competed in.

The Asian Beach Games is a multi-sport event held every two years among athletes representing countries from Asia. The games celebrate cooperation and unity despite differences where athletes from a wide variety of nations are able to travel, meet new people, and bring back memories about the rest of the world to their home nations. The Asian Beach Games forge unity and friendship between their member nations by joining athletes, trainers, and officials together.

Many international beach sporting events are organized every year in Bali. But games like the Asian Beach Games, requires a specific plan with concentrated efforts involving governmental and non governmental sectors for its success. To steer these diversified activities, the Bali Asian Beach Games Organizing Committee (BABGOC) was formed in March 2006.

BABGOC, under the patronage of KONI and the city of Bali, in close cooperation with the Indonesian Government, is working diligently to meet the preparation schedules and expectations to stage and operate a sustainable Asian Beach Games, leading to a long-term legacy.

How do I hate thee? Let me count the ways… Diane English's long-gestating remake of Clare Boothe Luce's 1936 bitchfest is so consistently, outrageously wrongheaded in every way it's hard to know where to start, but the fact that it turns a viciously knowing satire of privileged female misbehavior into a "you go girl!" knockoff of the SEX AND THE CITY movie (2008) is as good a place as any.

Luce's play revolves around the gossipy, backbiting friendships that bind a group of financially privileged women and, to put not too fine a point on it, ripped them to haute couture shreds. It's often dismissed as misogynistic and old fashioned, but Luce herself always insisted she wasn't out to paint women overall as shallow, conniving, man-obsessed gold diggers of varying degrees of sophistication -- just society women with too much money and time on their hands to bother cultivating anything but their jewelry collections. In English's vaguely feminist telling, Mary Haines (Meg Ryan) is the perfect modern superwoman: She keeps a lovely Connecticut home for her husband, Wall Street wolf Steven; is a caring -- if oblivious -- mother to her confused 11-year-old daughter, Molly (India Ennenga); and designs clothes for her father's firm. But to Mary's shock and dismay, a chatty Saks Fifth Avenue manicurist (Debi Mazar) lets slip that her BFF, perfume spritzer Crystal Allen (Eva Mendez, who's no Joan Crawford), is having an affair with a rich man named, yes, Steven Haines. For advice and emotional support, Mary turns to her best girlfriends: vaguely artsy Earth mother Edie Cohen (Debra Messing); fashion-magazine editrix Sylvie Fowler (Annette Bening, who's no Rosalind Russell), who, unbeknownst to the gal-pack, is hanging onto her high-powered job by her perfectly manicured nails; sassy lesbian essayist Alex Fisher (Jada Pinkett Smith), who's dating a very angry supermodel, assiduously not working on her new book and adds two tokens in one to the otherwise blandly Anglo-hetero mix. They all tell her to dump Steven's cheating ass: This is the 21st century, for Goddess' sake! Mary also solicits the opinions of her no-nonsense housekeeper (Cloris Leachman), Molly's fresh-faced Danish nanny (Tilly Scott Pedersen), the tough-talking Hollywood agent (Bette Midler) she meets at an exclusive yoga retreat, and her own pragmatic mother (Candice Bergen), who supplies the film's only genuinely biting lines and suggests that Mary step back and look at the big picture before acting rashly.

George Cukor directed the first film version of The Women in 1939 from a screenplay by Jane Murfin and the famously sharp-tongued Anita Loos, of GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDS fame, and the result set a very high bar. But the much-derided musical remake, THE OPPOSITE SEX (1956), looks like laser-cut brilliance next to English's bland, tin-eared reimagining, which manages to suggest both that women have come a long way, baby, and that they need to look to their pubescent daughters for personal validation. Google introduced Chrome in part because it wants faster browsing and the richer Web applications that speed will unlock. So how does Chrome actually stack up?

Google's Chrome overpowers the other browsers on the five subtests by which Google measures its browser's JavaScript performance.

Lars Bak, the Google engineer who was the technical leader for Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine, said at the launch event Tuesday he's confident Chrome is "many times faster" than the rivals at running JavaScript, the programming language that powers Google Docs, Gmail, and many other Web applications.

But when pressed for specifics, he told me to try them out. So I did.

Google offers a site with five JavaScript benchmarks. On each one of these tests, Chrome clearly trounced the competition. I hope benchmarking experts and developers will weigh in with comments about how well these tests represent true JavaScript performance on the Web--either for ordinary sites or for rich Web apps.

Here's the site description of the speed tests:

• Richards: OS kernel simulation benchmark, originally written in BCPL by Martin Richards (539 lines).
• DeltaBlue: One-way constraint solver, originally written in Smalltalk by John Maloney and Mario Wolczko (880 lines).
• Crypto: Encryption and decryption benchmark based on code by Tom Wu (1,689 lines).
• RayTrace: Ray tracer benchmark based on code by Adam Burmister (3,418 lines).

Google's overall score is head and shoulders above the competition for executing JavaScript.

Studio 'Muggles' postpone new Harry Potter film until 2009

Harry Potter fans clamoring for the next movie installment of the boy wizard's adventures will have to wait until 2009 after a decision to postpone release of the new film, officials said Thursday.

A statement from Warner Bros. Pictures said the original November release date for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", the sixth movie adaptation of J.K. Rowling's books, had now been shifted to July 17, 2009.

Warner president Alan Horn said the decision was taken to guarantee the studio a major summer blockbuster in 2009, and was partially explained by the Hollywood writer's strike, which paralyzed the movie industry this year.

"Like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers' strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films -- changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of," Horn said.

"We agreed the best strategy was to move 'Half-Blood Prince' to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer."

A "tent pole" movie is usually a big-budget, heavily promoted film relied on by a studio to turn a profit rapidly.

Horn said a summer release date would benefit box office revenues, citing the most recent Harry Potter film, the second-highest grossing film in the franchise after the first instalment.

Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, said the change would not affect production of future Harry Potter films, the two-part "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the final installment in the series.

"The good news (for fans) is that the gap will now be shortened between 'Half-Blood Prince' and the first part of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,'" Robinov said.

The five Harry Potter films released so far have grossed more than 4.47 billion dollars worldwide since 2001, making it one of the most lucrative franchises of all time in terms of box-office.

Michael Phelps became the first competitor in the history of the Olympics to win eight gold medals at a single Games as the United States won the men's 4x100m medley relay on Sunday.

With the victory, Phelps overtook compatriot Mark Spitz, who won seven swimming gold medals at Munich in 1972.

Phelps had opened the swimming competition with a victory in the first event, the 400m individual medley, and went on to win the 200m medley, 100m and 200m butterfly, 200m freestyle and both the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays.

Seven of his golds - including the first six - all came with world records, while his seventh, in the 100m butterfly, was by a margin of just one one-hundredth of a second.

In Athens four years ago, Phelps won six gold medals (100m and 200m butterfly, 200 and 400m individual medley, 4x200m freestyle relay and 4x100m medley relay), and two bronze (200m free and 4x100m free relay).

His 14 career gold medals are the most of any Olympian, with his nearest rivals Spitz, athletes Carl Lewis and Paavo Nurmi and Gymnast Larysa Latynina - who all won nine in their careers.

At the age of 23, Phelps has set a record for the total number of medals won by a male Olympian with 16.

Russian gymnast Nikolai Andrianov with 15 - seven gold, five silver and three bronze in 1972, 1976 and 1980 - had held the mark.

Only Latynina's 18 career medals exceed Phelps's total.

Yulianti, ranked just 21 in the world, came charging back from one game down against the Chinese third seed to win 11-21, 21-13, 21-15.

"It was unexpected throughout this tournament (of winning a medal). I was sure I would lose at some stage," she said.

"My strategy was to make her tired, although today she played more aggressively but I stuck to my game plan in the end."

Yulianti's win denied the Olympic hosts a clean sweep of the medals in the women's singles, with China's Xie Xingfang taking on team-mate Zhang Ning in the gold medal match later Saturday.

Unseeded in Beijing, Yulianti has been the surprise package of this tournament, downing her higher-ranked rivals on the way to the closing stages.

Yu raced to a one-game lead Saturday, but Yulianti drew on her fighting strength in the second, producing precision shots that clearly frustrated Yu.

In the decider, Yulianti took an 8-4 lead, but Yu mounted a comeback to come within one point at 9-8 down.

The Indonesian held her nerve, winning the next nine straight points before fighting off a last gasp offensive from Yu to clinch the bronze.

Yulianti was beaten by defending champion Zhang in the semi-final.

When we reported last week about how high-tech this year's Olympic broadcasting would be, we didn't imagine that a Chinese newspaper would uncover the fact that some of the fireworks in the opening ceremonies were actually CGI animation. A series of 29 footprint-shaped fireworks really did "march" across Beijing last Friday night (which I wrote about for Popular Mechanics' website), but the television audience only saw a few of them. Instead, they watched 55 seconds of a prerecorded rendering of what the fireworks "would have looked like" if a helicopter had been following them across the sky filming them on a clear night.

NBC commentators indicated that there was something "cinematic" about the fireworks, without coming out and saying that the home audience might has well have been watching Gandalf's fireworks in The Lord of the Rings, since both sequences were probably prepared in similar ways. Millions of people around the world watched the coverage in "real" time, without that commentary.

We love CGI, though not necessarily in a presentation narrated by news anchors. Of course, after the truth about the fireworks footage came out, we learned that one of the cute little singers in the opening ceremonies was lip-syncing the voice of a less attractive little girl. Soon we'll probably discover that the impressive Bird's Nest stadium is three feet high and being filmed on a sound stage in Taiwan. Or will we? Nationalism's Equivalent of Doping
China knew that without CGI footage, the footprint fireworks it was planning wouldn't look nearly as good. The planners could have done a few things: scrap the footprint plan altogether because it would be a logistical nightmare to film, or stage the footprints for the live audience in China without worrying about what they would look like on TV. Instead of taking either of these routes, the planners decided to cheat.

I believe that a similar train of thought goes through athletes' heads when they decide to use drugs ("I could decide not to compete because I'm not really good enough," or "I could try really, really hard knowing that there's a good chance I could lose without doping"). Cheating is the third choice that many take when faced with two unappealing possibilities, and it happens often, whether we're talking about memoirs that are full of lies or the four athletes booted from this year's Tour de France.

China is trying to show its best possible face to the world this summer. Some of what it's done (amazing architecture, cleaning up the city's air) has been fantastic, while in other areas the country has cut corners (besides the fireworks, did anybody really believe that all of the female Chinese gymnasts were over 16?). The problem is that the attempts to mislead international viewers undercut all of the legitimate efforts that the country has made. Just as a few dopers can bring down the reputation of an entire sport, China's use of CGI undermines a legitimately impressive spectacle.

Discouraging Future Fakers
Some might argue that the revelation that CGI was inserted seamlessly into TV footage viewed around the world opens doors for conspiracy theorists. Will anyone ever be able to believe television again? If this CGI fakery is possible, why believe in any televised fireworks? Why, for that matter, should we believe that NASA sent men to the moon?

Anything can be faked in photos and on film now. The evidence that realistic trickery is possible is in pretty much every blockbuster movie from the past decade. The evidence that governments try to convince others with faked images is also rampant, with Iran's notorious missile-test Photoshopping being Exhibit A.

But even if you can't be sure that what you're seeing is true in the moment you're watching it, the recent Chinese debacles show that however well faked the presentation, the truth will come out. In the case of the fireworks, the programmer behind them spoke to the press because he was proud of his work. After all, no one noticed! It was great animation that took nearly a year to perfect. And this happened under an authoritarian government — he may even face consequences for speaking out. If that sort of secret can't be kept in China, where almost anything can be classified as a state secret, can you imagine anyone keeping a secret about faked footage in the U.S.?

You Can't Fool Some People All the Time
Though the technology for creating fake television footage gets better all the time, the means for detecting it have gotten better as well. If the Beijing Times hadn't broken the footprint firework story, somebody else would have, probably within days of the event. China spent millions of dollars on its Olympic opening ceremony. The people behind it must be disappointed that its presentation is now embroiled in petty controversies, thought they brought it on themselves by trying to deliberately mislead people. If there were any plans to do something similar for the closing ceremonies, you can bet the CGI footage is now on the cutting-room floor.

As far as scale models go, I'm not sure you'll ever find out quite as impressive as this absolutely enormous one depicting what Shanghai is supposed to look like in 2020. At over 1,000 square feet, it shows every single building in China's most populated city, or at least every single building planned.

It's on the third floor of the Shanghai Urban Planning Museum, and it is in fact the largest scale model of a city in the world. The attention to detail is absolutely astounding.

Who says a PC has to be rectangular, or even square? Designer Apostol Tnokovski thinks the PC world is round, and conceived this 6-inch orb-shaped number as his proof. Not only is E-Ball oddball shaped, it’s called “the smallest PC ever made.”

Take a look at the pics, and you'll see the pop-out laser mouse, a pico projector inside thatilluminates either the wall or a sheet of paper for a screen, and that laser keyboard that would almost certainly be a clumsy input device. Fix that, and find a motherboard that’ll fit inside this palm-sized baby, and Apostol might be onto something here.

Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker are now both full-fledged Jedi, and it's Anakin who has a Padawan apprentice, a young girl named Ahsoka, a teenage female Togruta, which is a race of red-skinned, horned aliens. Essentially an extended trailer for the 2008 Cartoon Network animated series, STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS takes place between the fifth and sixth live-action STAR WARS films and chronicles the adventures of Anakin Skywalker during the early years of the war between the empire and the rebels.

Jedi warrior Anakin the bland Matt Lanter) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (James Arnold Taylor) are in the thick of battle with rebel forces when they receive word that Rotta (David Acord), the much-loved son of Jabba the Hutt (Kevin Michael Richardson) has been kidnapped. The Jedi council hopes that an alliance with Hutt clan will aid their cause and dispatch Obi-Wan, Anakin and Anakin's insolent new padawan, Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein), to rescue the malodorous Hutlett. The highly stylized look of CLONE WARS is explicitly modeled on the Sylvia and Gerry Adams sci-fi marionette series Thunderbirds, a fact that will no doubt be lost on the ten year olds who are the film's target audience: Their parents weren't born when Thunderbirds first aired. Bu the film's real drawback for adult STAR WARS fans is its relentless dullness coupled with the fact that Ahsoka, hailed as a new generation of can-do Lucasian heroine, spends the bulk of the film schlepping a baby and trading toothless double entendres with Anakin. BEIJING - Beijing opens the doors this week to its latest Olympic creation - a massive glass-and-steel airport terminal with a gently sloping roof that will welcome visitors to the Summer Games.

Fronted by pillars of deep imperial red, Terminal 3 at Beijing Capital International Airport boasts polished floors and a high ceiling dotted with triangular skylights.

The huge, airy interior will have 64 Western and Chinese restaurants, 90 retail shops, and a state-of-the-art-baggage handling system. A high-speed commuter train will whisk passengers into the city, while the runway is capable of handling Airbus' huge A380 superjumbo.

The terminal is a project designed to relieve the overloaded airport's other two terminals and accommodate expected rapid growth in the number of visitors to Beijing.

The terminal is "a safe and efficient non-competition venue for the much anticipated Beijing Olympics Games," said Dong Zhiyi, deputy general manager of the Capital Airport Holding Co.

Six international and domestic airlines will begin operating in the terminal Friday, while others will switch over from the other two terminals in March. The Olympics start August 8.

On Tuesday, the sound of hammering and the buzz of electric saws could be heard as workers rushed to put finishing touches on shops and other facilities. Glass windows and doors were polished, shelves were stocked and plastic covers were torn off chairs behind check-in counters. Electricians worked on last-minute wiring as signs with airline logos lay on the sidewalk.

Designed by British architect Norman Foster, the building attempts to combine traditional architectural elements with up-to-date technology. Its red columns and matte gold roof are meant to evoke Beijing's imperial palaces and temples.

The floor space of the terminal and ground transportation center covers 1.3 million square meters (14 million square feet).

China's capital needed a new terminal even without the Olympics, with double-digit economic growth rapidly outpacing infrastructure expansion plans. Dong said he expects the whole airport to receive 64 million visitors this year. That is up from 50 million last year and 20 million in 2000.

But this third entry in the popular MUMMY series -- not counting the 2002 spin-off THE SCORPION KING -- is still passable popcorn fare, even if you'll barely taste it before swallowing.

England, 1946. Thirteen years have passed since Rick "Ricochet" O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and his wife, Evelyn (Maria Bello, filling in for an AWOL Rachel Weisz), last sent Egyptian mummy Imhotep back to the afterlife, and they're now enjoying a life of quiet retirement in their sprawling Oxfordshire estate. Perhaps things are a little too quiet: While a bored Rick tries his hand a fly-fishing as a way of passing the time, Evelyn, who has found a new career for herself writing pulpy, supernatural adventure novels ("The Mummy" is one, "The Mummy Returns" another), stares at a blank page of typewriter paper, feeling bereft of adventure and inspiration. This spell of conjugal boredom is broken when the O'Connell's receives a visit from a Foreign Office minster who begs them to perform one final duty for the Crown: As a gesture of good will toward China, which is currently undergoing tremendous internal upheaval, the British government would like to return the fabled Eye of Shangri-la, a gold encrusted jewel that is said to point they way toward the spring eternal life. Rick and Evelyn agree to courier the stone to Shanghai, unaware that their now-grown son Alex (Luke Ford), whom they think is away at university, is already in China: Unbeknownst to his parents, Alex has been searching for the tomb of the Emperor Han (played in the lengthy prologue by Jet Li), the merciless tyrant who united the warring kingdoms of China under his iron-fisted rule. After conquering his rivals, enslaving their people and literally working them to death building the Great Wall, Han sought the one thing no man on earth had ever been able to achieve -- immortality -- and he charged his trusty aide, General Ming (Russell Wong), to seek out the witch Zi Juan (Michelle Yeoh) whom Han believed held the secret to eternal life. When the jealous emperor had Ming executed for consorting with the sorceress he planned to make empress, Zi Juan threw a curse on Han and his army, turning them all into terracotta figures. Not long after uncovering Han's sarcophagus, Alex realizes has been used as a pawn by the ambitious General Yang (Anthony Wong), who has evil plans for China: Like Emperor Han before him, he dreams of unifying the various factions that are currently vying for power, and plans on releasing Han and his army from Zi Juan's spell so they can do the dirty work for him. Foolish mortal!

There's nothing inherently wrong with formula: The whole pulp tradition on which movies like THE MUMMY and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK are based depends on age-old, easily identifiable archetypes whose fates are a given from the get-go. But if the story's well told, all the foregone conclusions really shouldn't matter, and therein lies the difference between genre expectations and dull predictability. THE DRAGON EMPEROR walks a fine line between the two. The screenplay by Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, who together also wrote SHANGHAI NOON and SHANGHAI KNIGHTS, front-loads a few good ideas, but falters on the execution: There are so few surprises that one not only begins anticipating the next scene, but looking forward to the ending. --Ken Fox

There is a new innovation of instant messaging software is called Google Lively.

Google Lively is a web-based virtual environment produced by Google Inc. similar to the instant messaging software IMVU. On the opening download page, users are invited to "Create an avatar and chat with your friends in rooms you design."

Lively is currently only supported on Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, using Windows XP or Windows Vista. The program is designed to be integrated with the current Internet and provide a new way to access information. According to Google, a Mac OS X and Linux version are on the way as well.

Engineering manager Niniane Wang supervised this Google project, described in The New York Times by Brad Stone:

Up to 20 people can occupy a room and chat with one another. (Text appears as cartoon-style bubbles atop the avatars.) Users can design their own virtual environments, hanging on the walls videos from YouTube and photos from Picasa, Google’s photo service, as if they were pieces of art. Inside Google, the product was headed by Niniane Wang, an engineering manager. Students at Arizona State University have been testing Lively for several months. Ms. Wang wrote in the blog post that she developed Lively as a “20 percent project,” referring to Google’s philosophy that employees should spend one day a week working on projects outside of their day-to-day responsibilities. Her spare time could cause some problems for companies with similar ideas. Second Life, the virtual world run by Linden Labs of San Francisco, is known for its much larger virtual world that hundreds of thousands of users can enter at the same time. But it is accessible through a separate program, not a Web browser.

Unlike Second Life, the Lively users cannot buy and sell products. Since there is no user-generated content on Lively, items such as hairstyles, clothing and furniture are limited to a catalog of pre-designed selections.

Wang introduced her product July 8, 2008 with this comment:

If you enter a Lively room embedded on your favorite blog or website, you can immediately get a sense of the room creator's interests, just by looking at the furniture and environment they chose. You can also express your own personality by customizing your avatar's look, showing people who you are without having to say a word. Of course, you can chat with each other, and you can also interact through animated actions. In our user research, we’ve been amazed at how much more poignant it is to receive an animated hug than seeing the text “hug”. Prior to this release, we worked closely with Arizona State University. Based on feedback from ASU students and with help from the Google Desktop team, we added support for playing YouTube videos in virtual TVs and showing photos in virtual picture frames inside our rooms.

Gadgets in Lively rooms can also run on a user's desktop through Google Desktop.

Looks like telepresence really will be all the rage in the future. The TMSUK-4 created by Japanese robotics developer Tmsuk will let shoppers enjoy the full tactile experience of browsing shelves without having to step into the store. We were all ready to compare the idea to the immortally reclining meatbags from Pixar's WALL•E, but Tmsuk handily disarmed us with their demo. The robot allowed — get ready to awww — an infirm grandmother to shop with her granddaughter.

One of the best things, the altered TMSUK-4 doesn't take an expert to control. It can be guided with simply a cell phone. Granny used the keypad to control the robot and, using Japan's superior cell phone technology, watched through the robot's eyes as she got her granddaughter to model several hats for her. For Tmsuk, seeing the robot in action makes a future where shoppers all over the world can peruse the streets of New York and London easily imaginable.

The demonstration took place on July 10th at the Izutsuya department store in Kitakyushu, Japan.

Miss Venezuela is Miss Universe 2008

Miss Venezuela was crowned Miss Universe 2008 on Monday in a contest marked by the spectacle of Miss USA falling down during the evening gown competition for the second year in a row.

An elated Dayana Mendoza received the crown from her predecessor, Riyo Mori of Japan, and then prepared to meet a gaggle of reporters. Miss Venezuela, 22, was once kidnapped in her homeland and says the experience taught her to remain poised under pressure.

Tension got under the skin of Crystle Stewart of Texas, the second Miss USA in a row to fall down during the Miss Universe pageant. She tripped on the train of her bejeweled evening gown as she made her entrance.

During the 2007 Miss Universe contest in Mexico City, Miss USA Rachel Smith also tumbled during the evening gown competition and became an unintended star on You Tube, where the video was shown over and over again.

Like Smith, Stewart quickly stood up after her fall and continued on as if nothing had happened.

Stewart, 26, is a motivational speaker and former track and filed star who is working on a book called "Waiting to Win." The Houston native plans to open a character-development school for young children and has worked with autism victims in the Texas schools.

The final five contestants included four from Latin America: Miss Mexico, Miss Dominican Republic, Miss Colombia and Miss Venezuela. Rounding out the final five was Miss Russia.

Miss Colombia finished second behind Mendoza.

Miss Thailand won the prize for best national costume and Miss El Salvador was chosen by her peers as Miss Congeniality.

During her interview with the judges, Mendoza was asked who she thought has it easier in life, women or men.

"God made us to share and have differences," she replied, then highlighted what she regards as the different thought processes of men and women.

"Men think that the faster way to go to a point is to go straight," she said. "Women know that the faster way to go to a point is to go to the curves."

The NBC show was hosted by talk show star Jerry Springer and Spice Girl Melanie Brown and broadcast live to hundreds of millions of viewers in 170 countries.

Eighty contestants gathered in the seaside city of Nha Trang, Vietnam, vying to succeed reigning Miss Universe Riyo Mori of Japan.

Sporting yellow, green and orange bikinis, the 15 semifinalists strutted across the stage during the swimsuit competition to the sounds of Lady Gaga, who belted out the pulsating "Just Dance" in a platinum blond wig. Miss Vietnam, Lam Thuy Nguyen, was greeted with a roar from the Vietnamese audience.

The final 10 then competed in the evening gown event.

They performed in front of a panel of judges that included international fashion experts and Donald Trump Jr., whose father, the real estate magnate and TV star, co-owns the pageant with NBC.

This year's contestants spanned a wide range of experiences and aspirations.

Miss Albania was a professional basketball player. Miss Argentina says she has paranormal experiences. Miss Antigua & Barbuda is fascinated by snakes. Miss Angola was in a plane crash while trying to escape a conflict during her country's civil war.

The show has been a publicity bonanza for Vietnam, where beauty contests are very popular. The contest featured segments on many of the nation's most popular tourist destinations, such as Hue, Hoi An, Sapa and Ha Long Bay.

The program set has been dominated by iconic Vietnamese images, such as bamboo trees, conical hats and lotus flowers.

The tuxedoed Springer made a grand entrance on a motorbike -- the vehicle of choice in Vietnam where the streets are teeming with millions of the speeding two-wheelers.

The second feature spun off from the hugely popular television series, which ran from 1993 to 2002, plays like a stand-alone episode rather than drawing on the show's complex and sometimes muddled, which makes it more accessible to newcomers and occasional viewers than 1998's THE X-FILES. But like the first film, it isn't a patch on the series' best episodes, and on its own merits it's an okay thriller whose influences will be all-too clear to b-movie buffs.

Six years after FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), who were thrown together to investigate cases that defied (or seemed to defy) ordinary explanations, abandoned the so-called "x-files" division, their lives have gone in very different directions. Scully, the skeptical doctor whose Catholic faith was sorely tested by some of the cases she and Scully investigated, is now a staff physician at Our Lady of Sorrows Hospital and is deeply involved in the case of a young patient with a fatal genetic disorder. Mulder – blackballed by his former employers and officially a fugitive – has gone to ground and spends his days studying offbeat newspaper stories in the shadow of his iconic "I Want to Believe" poster. The abduction of an FBI agent in West Virginia brings them back into the fold via ambitious agent Dakota Whitney (Amanda Peet). Painfully aware that the clock is ticking for the missing woman, Agent Whitney's best lead is Father Joseph Fitzpatrick Crissman (Billy Connelly), a deeply compromised priest who claims to have visions and has inexplicably led them to their best clue yet: A neatly severed arm buried in the snow – granted, it's a man's arm and Whitney's task force can't begin to imagine what it has to do with the case, but it's all they have. Is Crissman genuinely psychic and, if so, could a true believer like Mulder tease enough concrete information from his vague and ambiguous paranormal insights to rescue the missing woman? Or does Crissman have some mundane connection to the case the FBI hasn't yet uncovered, one he's consciously or unconsciously mining for some perverse reason?

Series creator Chris Carter and longtime collaborator Frank Spotnitz (Carter directed and they co-wrote the screenplay) focus heavily on Mulder and Scully's thorny relationship, forged in the fire of horrific shared experience and doomed by their fundamental incompatibility: She skeptical to the bone and he's looking for proof that there are more things in heaven and earth than science can explain. Their simmering romance, rooted in friendship and intellectual curiosity, drove the series: Monsters of the week get old fast, which is one reason Kolchak: The Night Stalker, the 1970s series Carter claimed as his inspiration for The X-Files, burned out after 20 episodes. But without that background, their poignant reunion takes a backseat to long and none-too-subtle conversations about faith and belief. The Carter and Spotnitz's credit, such weighty concerns aren't the stuff of most mainstream genre movies. Even without Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker, Christopher Nolan's pitch-black sequel to BATMAN BEGINS (2005) would be a tour de force. But Ledger's mesmerizingly damaged agent provocateur is the film's dark heart, a presence so malevolently unpredictable that it remains palpable even when he's not on screen.

Millionaire Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) continues to live his double life as the crusading Batman, but at an ever-escalating personal cost: He's displaced and all but alone. But most importantly, he gives his top-notch cast plenty of room to breathe and inhabit their characters. The same super-heated visual imagination that made Guillermo del Toro's PAN'S LABYRINTH (2006) such a darkly thrilling delight is very much in evidence in his sequel to HELLBOY (2004). It's a shame that it's at the service of such a blandly conventional story.

Hellboy (Ron Perlman), a cigar-chomping demon with an ossified red right hand like a piledriver, entered our world in 1944, courtesy of a Nazi experiment in mucking around with interdimensional barriers. Raised by British occultist Trevor Bruttenholm (John Hurt) to use his supernatural powers for good, not evil, Hellboy works for the tio-secret Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, protecting regular folks from the likes of, well… him. Or pallid Prince Nuada (Luke Goss) of the Old Ones, who looks like one of J.R.R. Tolkien's flaxen-haired elves crossed with Marilyn Manson. Nuada has spent centuries perfecting his swordsmanship and seething about the truce his father struck with the human race, giving us the world above and confining ghosties, ghoulies and long-leggedy beasties to the world below. Nuada intends to raise the Golden Army – unstoppable automata controlled by a mystical crown – and take back the light for the powers of darkness. But first he has to reassemble the three parts of the crown, one of which is being protected by his twin sister, Nuala (Anna Walton), who's as pure of heart as Nuada is wicked. It's up to Hellboy and his cohorts – vaporous Johann Krauss (Jason Alexander and James Dodd, voiced by Seth MacFarlane), fire-starter Liz (Selma Blair) and aqua-man Abe Sapien (del Toro regular Doug Jones) – to stop him, a task complicated by their complicated entanglements: Liz is unhappily married to Hellboy and secretly pregnant to boot, while Abe has fallen in love with Nuala.

Wrathful twin vs. gentle twin, good vs. evil, light vs. dark – call it archetypal or call it clichéd, but its reductively familiar stuff. But, oh, the visions that emerge from del Toro's fan-boy fever dreams – a talking tumor, a beast with a retractable mace for an arm (and a face straight out of 1970's cult-favorite EQUINOX), an elegant death angel, a giant stone statue that opens into an underground city, a swarm "tooth fairies" who eat through flesh and bone like avenging locusts, a troll market beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, a primordial plant elemental that could be the love-child of H.P. Lovecraft and Mother Nature in an especially stormy mood, the golden army that could have sprouted from metal dragons' teeth… the wonders are, if not endless, then abundant. Dari sisi waktu respon, WindowsLive OneCare ternyata sangat lambat mendeteksi adanya malware baru. Lebih dari delapan jam. Padahal nilai terbaik ‘Very good’ hanya diberikan pada antivirus yang mampu memindai kurang dari dua jam. Kelemahan OneCare 2,0 di antaranya tidak bisa mendeteksi dua rootkit dari total 12 rootkit aktif yang dicobakan.

Kesimpulan

Berdasarkan test-test diatas memang tidak ada antivirus yang paling unggul disemua tahap pengetesan. Tetapi paling tidak bisa diambil beberapa antivirus yang cukup bagus dari kesemua test. Beberapa test mungkin tidak terlalu penting untuk diperhitungkan, seperti reaction times. Waktu reaksi 6-8 jam pun bisa dikatakan cukup bagus bagi kita. Selain itu Rootkit detection juga bukan hal yang begtu penting, mengingat saat ini masih sangat jarang jenis rootkit ini. Jadi kesimpulan disini hanya menilai dari tiga test sebelumnya. Dan ini pun mungkin sangat subyektif. Berikut Urutan Virus terbaik versi ebsoft berdasar test-test (3 test pertama) diatas :

AntiVir. Hampir disemua test mempunyai hasil yang sangat bagus. Ditambah lagi Antivir menyediakan versi Gratis, walaupun tidak semua fasilitas disediakan. Memang kadang masih salah mendeteksi beberapa file yang bersih sebagai virus. Antivir Web site
AVK 2008. Antivirus ini mungkin jarang kita dengar di negeri kita, tetapi berdasarkan test diatas, menduduki peringkat tertinggi dalam mendeteksi virus.
